Barak Ravitz Born (1982) and lives in Israel. Recent solo exhibitions: Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2006), Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv (2008); recent group exhibitions: Center for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv (2005), University of Haifa Art Gallery (2007), Herzliya Biennale (2007).
Barak Ravitz has created a sculpture resembling a chandelier, whose monumental size and striking presence are disproportionate to the exhibition space. This copy introduces itself as a parody of Versailles chandeliers, with some components related to new sculpture. In a world where both culture and installations deteriorate due to strategies of repetitive reconstruction, irony is important to Ravitz. The installation is exhibited alongside the video Let My Soul Die with the Foileschtick (2008) – a contemporary adaptation of the story of Samson, who struggled for his death to also be the death of his Philistine enemies. The two central scenes in this work feature Ravitz theatrically leaning against two pillars (in the Dvir Gallery in Tel Aviv); the following images appear to have been taken during an earthquake.
