akerman-labas1

Born in Belgium, 1950; lives in Paris. Akerman was first recognized as an avant-garde filmmaker for her film Jeanne Dielman (1975). In recent years, she has exhibited interdisciplinary works in various plastic art contexts. Recent solo exhibitions: Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2006), Marian Goodman Gallery, New York (2008); recent group exhibitions: Jewish Museum, Berlin (2007), MARCO Vigo, Spain (2007).

The 60-minute film Là-bas (Over There) (2006) was shot in Tel Aviv by Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, in response to a proposal that she create a film about Israel. The film is above all a framework, a tentative plan and a vantage point: the one Akerman creates for herself on the fourth floor of a Tel Aviv apartment house, in the rented apartment to which she retreats. In the course of editing the film, Akerman will realize that rather than offering an answer, the film continues to probe her exploration of time and space, and of the power of images to represent life in minute detail.
