Robin Rhode’s video performance The Storyteller (2006) features a lone performer whose story is animated by means of an expressive mural drawing, floor diagrams and simple props. Created in collaboration with French dancer Jean-Baptiste André, cellist Didier Petit and composer Christian Sebille, this work revolves around the interaction between a real person and a drawing in process. The animated charcoal drawing of a tree and the real dancer come together in a compelling pas de deux. Reminiscent of the creative freedom that characterized early cinema, this work employs a unique language that combines a number of mediums; enacting a dialogue between different means and tools, Rhode breathes life into the private world of his imagination.
