I Am Here (2007) is composed of two films projected side by side, which both feature Glasgow flute bands. The first is a Loyalist band supportive of the British crown, while the second is a Republican band. Initially, Buchanan had wanted to film the two bands together, but finally filmed each band separately. The bands are also captured as they are preparing to play and chatting amongst themselves. As the viewers watch one performance, muffled snatches of conversation can be heard from the second screen. “Both bands play, no one’s music interrupts anyone else’s and the pendulum edit means both get an equal crack at representation,” Buchanan explains. This work examines the elements that define and shape different identities, in response to the sectarian divide that rips through the streets of Glasgow (most often in the poorer areas). This divide is underscored by the two bands, which call their supporters to the barricades as they march. I Am Here sheds light on the relationship between war and music designed to rouse the troops and intimidate the enemy.
