Ulla von Brandenburg’s works include a range of forms culled from the world of the performing arts, and transplanted into the arena of visual art. In order to charge her works with the power embedded in the various codes and games associated with the stage, Brandenburg builds constructions that function as platfoms or spaces for staged scenes, living tableaux, or possible encounters. Her labyrinthine works, which are composed of countless parts, make use of numerous tools. At first glance, works like 8 (2007) or La Maison (2008) resemble a labyrinthine space or path circumscribed by screens in eight simple, bright colors inspired by a 19th century psychologist. Searching for a synthesis of space and time, the artist use these screens to project a silent film. The film, which she has created based on Anton Chekhov’s play “Uncle Vanya,” repeats itself in a constant loop.
